On Friday I will be leaving for Indiana for an internship recording and researching historic structures. I am pretty excited to be working in the field of historic preservation again and to move to a part of the country that is completely foreign to me. I will be surveying historic buildings and bridges for the state inventory of historic places. There is just something so exciting to me about exploring a new town and then digging deep into the history of the people that made that place what it is today. Granted, I will be working in the middle of what is essentially farmland usa… seriously, I couldnt find even one craigslist apartment listing for the summer, and when I looked at a map, the whole entire county is fields and itsy bitsy one street towns. I am still excited. I lived in Wisconsin for the first few years of my life and even after my family moved to Florida, I always told my parents I would go back to the Midwest some day.
Mostly I am just excited to use my brain again and to dust off my knowledge of architectural style and research and really apply it. It is disturbing how much I have lost after just a year. I actually really like my job as a schoolphotographer, but at the end of the day, it is a monotonous job without a lot of promise for new opportunity. I hope to make my mark in the Indiana and to finally make a decision about what my next career move is going to be whether it be museum studies, historic preservation, or something else…who knows!
